Sunny, cold - frost warning - temps 5
Wow - how the season's change. Autumn is here - and the leaves are falling...snow in high elevations.
And the film of Still Life has started - last week! Stanbridge East, in the Eastern Townships, is standing in for Three Pines.
of course, the big question has been - who'll play Gamache- and we can now tell you - it's Nathaniel Parker. I'm thrilled....I know he played Inspector Lynley, but that was quite a few years ago, and Gamache is a different character.... I think Mr. Parker's a fabulous actor, and that's what we were looking for. someone who could bring the characteristics, the essence, of Gamache alive.
Very exciting to be on the set - and also a little nauseating. thrilling to see the characters walking around...upsetting to see them take on lives independent of me. Gosh, it's difficult. But rewarding.
The film is being produced for CBC television, but will also be seen around the world, including the UK and US....but no channels decided on yet. I'll tell you air dates and channels as soon as I know them.
Michael and I are off to the set again tomorrow....they've now moved to the indoor scenes. tomorrow they're shooting in Terrebonne - and Ralph cosham is coming up from Washington, to be in a scene. Ralph is the amazing narrator of the audio books!!! Can hardly wait to see the two Gamache's together.
Working on the third draft of Book 9 - halfway through. Hoping to be finished this draft before we leave for Vancouver International Writers Festival on Oct 18th. I quite like third drafts....much, much easier than 1st or 2nd. Less fear....and my mistakes are fewer, and more obvious. Easier to fix. As you can imagine, this book is quite complex...lots of plot lines to bring together, and the key is to appear to do it effortlessly.

Just about 2 months ago I (finally) learned of you and your brilliant Gamanche books, and last night I finished the third book! LOVE the books, love the characters, and adore Three Pines. I'm sure I'm alongside all your readers wishfully heading to Three Pines this weekend for a restful stay at the B&B with Gabri and Olivier. I'm thriled there are MORE books to come and a movie?!? Very excited! All my best to you. Thank you for creating such a fantastic escape for me!
I think Nathaniel Parker is perfect for the part. Can't wait to see Still Life, and it will be exciting to see the characters come to life.
I have been a captivated reader since your first book and have just finished reading "Beautiful Mystery". I love Gamache - and think Nathaniel Parker will bring his character to life amazingly well (delighted that a Brit has been chosen) - but I feel quite sad, not for the first time. Gamache is left so sad and alone and he (and your readers) need him, Reine Marie, Annie and Jean-Guy to have a happy ending. The love of a good woman is not enough, Gamache needs closure from the debacle at the Surete and his family needs some close to home joy. Please can we have a book with happier endings?
I am so happy for you Louise! When my bookstore was open, I was handselling your books like crazy from the beginning of life in Three Pines. It's been a bit of a thrill for me to watch the building of the series and your wonderful success. I can't wait for the movies, and I'm hoping they will do your lovely books justice. God bless!
I am surprised at the casting .. given in my mind Gamache has silver hair and a bit more age than Nathaniel .. plus I 'hear' Gamache speaking English with a bit of a French accent ... i worry now that Jean-Guy will be played by a 20-something ...
okay I am over my unhappiness because I am thrilled for you and us that these wonderful books will have a chance to reach so many more as films
I think Nathaniel Parker is a great choice! Have missed him since the Inspector Lynley series and am confident he can make us believe he is Gamache. Can't wait!
It is all well and good that you are enjoying the movie business, but what am I going to do until your next book to see what happens to Jean Luc? I am a patient woman, but so far I have been able to move easily from one book to another, having just discovered them a short time ago. These people are not characters in a book, they are my friends, and I want to know about Peter and Clara, and most of all Annie and Jean Luc! When????
(And down the road we can hardly wait to hear the story behind Ruth...)
I've just found your blog and am happy to tell you how much I LOVE your books and the family of characters you have created. I worked in a convent while I was a theological student, so I particularly enjoyed The Beautiful Mystery because I sang the offices with the Sisters. I'll be seeing you tonight in Vancouver, with my book in hand, hoping for a signature. Ginger
I discovered your books in May of this year and since then have read them all. When I finished The Beautiful Mystery, I thought "Oh geeze...when is the next book due out?".
I attended your session last night at the Vancouver Film Festival with the choir from Christ Church Cathedral. It was amazing! You are a very warm and witty woman.
I could not be happier, Louise. I'm ecstatic that the STILL LIFE film will be seen in the US. And bravo for Nathaniel Parker – brilliant!
Where are yooouuu? Please don't abandon this lovely classy blog for horrid tawdry Facebook! Don't be seduced, don't go to the dark side, Louise! Come back, its not too late...
Katie (a from-the-first-book fan)
Discovered your books last year and they sustained me through a very difficult recovery from heart surgery for a leaking valve & got complicated from heart failure. I checked out the entire series, book by book, and came to love Gamache, Reine Marie, Jean-Guy, Annie....as friends. I just finished The beautiful Mystery & was utterly entranced all the way through and now am eagerly awaiting the next one!! It is uncomfortable to be left hanging and now have to wait an interminable amount of time for the next book!!! I tell everyone I know about these books!!
I can't say enough about how much I absolutely adore your books and entire cast of characters. When I think of Gamache, Michael Kitchen from Foyles War comes to mind instantly, but Nathaniel Parkers is an excellent choice Congratulations on scoring him. I'm soooooo looking forward to the movie.
Please don't stop writing! I'm 1/4 way through The Beautiful Music and captivated once again. I've never been as enthusiastic about a series as I am about this one.
AMAZING Coincidence I'd like to share.
I am a voracious reader since childhood, but mysteries never caught on for me. I have read a few P.D. James, but that was it.
In March 2012 I was visiting Montreal, my home town, and staying at my friend's Apartment on Outremont and Bernard.
On one of my walks on St Catherine Street, I went into Chapters and then immediately began to exit because of the loud irritating banging music that was being played. At the entrance door I noticed a display of books by an unknown author to me, Louise Penny.
However, when I just glanced at the book I read the name as Louise Pelly, someone I went to Law School.
I was very intrigued and picked up the book. I quickly realized my mistake. However, I glanced at the first two pages and was totally startled to read the name "Clara Morrow." '
I was startled because my friend's daughter's name, at whose apartment I staying is named Clara Morrow. Now that may seem like that was the coincidence, BUT only partly,
I bought the book and rushed and with great enthusiasm to call Clara's grandmother in Ottawa, where Clara was visiting, to announce this coincidence WHEN WHAT DID I LEARN.
Coincidently, Clara's grandmother, Sally Morrow, that day was at the Gift Shop at the Heart Institute in Ottawa, also a voracious reader, looking for a book to read. Unbelievably and coincidently, she too picked up Still Life.
Coincidence continues.
When I got back to work in Toronto, I told a colleague of mine, also a voracious reader, about the coincidence and would bring in the book for her the next day.
The next day when I brought the book in, she said I bought it and started reading. Why, I asked. She said when i got home there was an email from Indigo telling me this is a book that I would like. The coincidence was too much, had to start reading it right away.
She has read all of your books on her e-reader. I like the physical book and have read all but one.
Love love your writing. One big disappointment!!!!!! When buying your books at the bookstore, there was a lot of Bury the Dead, but not, The Brutal Telling. So bought Bury the Dead. (Brilliant Brilliant book)
Finding it very hard to now read The Brutal Telling, as I know how it all has turned out.
Maybe these two books should be sold as part one and part two as a warning for the spoiler if you read Bury the Dead first.
My Zen Shiatsu therapist, also a Sensi - tells me there is no such thing as a coincidence. Meant to be.
Thank you thank you for the Joy of your amazing story telling and your buddhist references = subtle and deep.
Can't wait for your next novel!!!!!!
Louise,
(my French-Canadian, paternal grandmouther's name)
I cannot thank you enough for sharing your gift. The depth & subtleties of your characters is so very satisfying, and I just love them.
A "friend of a friend" loaned me The Beautiful Mystery". I promised to take good care of it, but alas--I must return it with tear stains on the final pages. My heart is seeping like a cracked jar of honey. I was so glad I was reading it @ home as the "turn away" scene caused me to scream "NO, NO, NO" which would have been quite embarressing in public. Now, two days later I find I have an old Toni Braxton torch song running in my head called "Unbreak my heart". You can do it--please. Torture us for awhile if you must but please, please return Jean-Guy to us well and whole at some point.
Also--congrats on the film pick-up! Will be watching for it here in the U.S.--I'm hoping on PBS.
Thank you again for birthing these wonderful characters.
Like so many others, I came to your books just recently via the audiobook route. Have "read" 3 (Still Life, Beautiful Mystery, and A Rule Against Murder". Have A Brutal Telling and A Trick of the Light ready to go. I was sure, when I finished A Beautiful Mystery, that you would HAVE TO follow it up with another Gamache/Beauvoir tale. Can't wait to see it on the shelf. Also looking forward to the movie. Keep these marvelous stories coming, Louise. Greg
I love reading historical mysteries and last summer a friend told me that I might enjoy reading your books.I picked one up and became hooked and now have read all of your books. They are wonderful they are more than mysteries they are full of insight into human nature and at times very wise. - I love all of the characters. You have built up a wonderful chemistry between all of them and Three Pines is a place anyone would long to visit if not live in!
BUT - your last book I had a very hard time finishing.I have to say I hated the ending. The relationship between Gamache and Beavoir was wonderful .... I just can not believe or want to believe that he would turn away from his mentor ... If there is a next book which I presume there will be I think the reader needs some closure on the evil that resides in the Surete and that Beavoir needs to return to the light of Gamache.
I look forward to the movie and to seeing the characters on the screen.
I just got A Beautiful Mystery from the library Friday and I can't stop reading it! I believe it's my favorite yet.
Please keep us posted regarding the films and let us know which channels they will air on in the United States.
I have so enjoyed your books and have learned a bit of history about Quebec , Gregorian Chants, and the quiet tensions that sometimes still vibrate beneath the surface of the French and English population. Although I live in Chicago and have traveled to Europe, I have not been to Quebec or anywhere in Canada for that matter. I am now very eager to visit Montreal and Quebec City and experience this wonderful place you have described so well in your novels!
